Killer Cats

A Science reporter on the BBC website reports this week that

"Cats are one of the top threats to US wildlife, killing billions of animals each year ... they are responsible for the deaths of between 1.4 and 3.7 billion birds and 6.9-20.7 billion mammals annually"

Stray and feral cats are mostly responsible, but pet cats do their part also. In fact, domestic cats are currently blamed for the global extinction of 33 species.

Read more about these utterly vicious killing machines here. As for me, if I were to consider writing an article about a dangerous creature currently threatening the existence of hundreds of species on the earth, I think I might focus on

                                                                                                                        homo sapiens ...

Leo Cullum RIP

Leo Cullum, whose cartoons in the New Yorker I recognise, although I never put a name to them, has died. Here are a couple of my favourites for your enjoyment.

An obituary may be found here.

mice suspects in deadly cat fire

this is not a joke, and is one of the most popular stories currently on the front page of the bbc online news page. here it is for you:

"Mice may be responsible for a blaze that killed nearly 100 cats at an animal shelter near the Canadian city of Toronto, officials say. The fire at the humane society shelter in Oshawa also killed three dogs and some rats that were up for adoption. An initial report from the fire marshal says mice or rats chewing through electrical wires in the ceiling are likely to have sparked the blaze.
Offers of help have been pouring in from animal lovers across Canada. "It's unfortunate and ironic that mice caused the fire that killed the cats," Toronto Humane Society spokesman Ian McConachie told the BBC News website. "Unfortunately, the mice probably perished in the fire as well," he added.

The $250,000 (£137,000) fire is still under investigation by the Ontario Fire Marshal's office. Mr McConachie said it would be some days before a final report would be released. In all, only nine dogs, two cats and one rat were rescued in Wednesday's early morning blaze. They are being housed in a nearby municipal shelter, while volunteers rebuild the burnt-down shelter for the Humane Society of Durham Region. "

well, i did pick it to share with you, but then i am stuck indoors while the snow ploughs rule the roads.

aaaaaahhhhh, bless ...

unable to find pictures of lions and lambs laying down together, the times instead provides us with this lovely story of a pussycat who doesn't seem to know who her enemies are supposed to be:

"A cat has succeeded in repressing her predatory instincts by adopting seven chicks to rear alongside her own litter of kittens. One-year-old Nimra, from Madaba in Jordan, has been watching over her unusual litter ever since the chicks’ mother died a month ago."

if only people would believe this kind of thing is possible for us as well.
