Bunny Ears

Manu Tuilagi has announced that he will be writing formally to the UK Prime Minister David Cameron to apologise for making bunny ears during a photo op with the triumphant British Lions rugby team outside Number 10.

It seems to have caused a lot of fuss, or at least attracted the attention of those newspapers that look to entertain rather than inform. I think it's a pretty harmless and utterly daft prank, and must admit that there is a daft part of me that did enjoy seeing the photograph.

If one must make more of the situation, then I might agree with the former England rugby player Brian Moore (and U of Nottingham alum) when he tweeted:

"Tuilagi, if he'd unveiled a banner saying "Why is primary school sport funding being cut in 2 years time?" I'd have been impressed."

If one wishes to make more of a situation and use one's powers for good, then that would make sense. Of course, this was just a spur-of-the-moment thing and luckily for Mr Tuilagi the PM has graciously tweeted his forgiveness.

Meanwhile, in other news:

1. Syria tells Russia it has proof that rebels have chemical weapons
2. How mercury is poisoning gold-miners
3. The truth about life on the breadline in the UK (Jack Monroe blogs)
4. Hong Kong's Chief Imam celebrates openness to multi-ethnic worshippers

and finally, sort of back to where we started ...

5. Yes, David Cameron, 'Yid' really is a race-hate word. Here's why:

Out4Marriage Continues to Campaign

With the news yesterday that Scotland is ready for gay marriage, and David Cameron's speech at 10 Downing Street in which he said once again,

"It's something I feel passionately about and I think if it's good enough for straight people like me, it's good enough for everybody and that's why we should have gay marriage and we will legislate for it"

you'd think enough already with the campaigning. However, it's precisely because Out4Marriage and its partners continue to keep speaking up that more and more public figures are aligning themselves with those working for equality in marriage!

I do have a particular concern, and that is the small percentage of women involved in this project. I would love to see more of us making videos, and cannot figure out why we are not. The guys fuelling the project with their energy and determination would love our input, support and leadership. If there is something about Out4Marriage that is not welcoming, and we're not getting it; please somebody let us know so we may learn and improve. Thank you.

Gaga Galliano

So the fashion designer John Galliano is to stand trial for making anti-semitic remarks. As presented by Rupert M's Sun newspaper, a video is out showing Galliano slumped at a cafe table talking to people sitting nearby.

He sounds totally hammered and says he loves Hitler (yemach shemo) and something about how if today's Jews were alive then they would have been gassed. Stupid stupid stupid drunken man. Worth sending him to prison for 6 months for being a jerk? Are there not more important issues upon which to concentrate?

For example, UK Prime Minister travels around the Middle East pimping British-manufactured guns with one mouth and with the other decries Colonel Gaddafi's violent response to rebel forces in Libya. O don't get me started ...

kate moss mess

this is absolutely fabulous. reports are just coming out that kate moss met david cameron, and thought he was a plumber. it's going to be on parky, or maybe was already this evening. in any case, here is what yahoo had to say about the event:

"Conservative Party leader Cameron said in an interview to be broadcast Saturday that he met Moss at a charity bash recently and inexplicably found himself engaged in a conversation with her about flood damage to her home. "So I went on like this, twittering on, and she turned around and said, 'God, you sound like a really useful guy, can I have your phone number?'" he told the Parkinson chatshow on ITV1. "I went back to my table and said, 'The good news is, I met Kate Moss and she wanted my telephone number. The bad news is, I think she thinks I'm something to do with drainage'."
