A Laugh for Doctor Who Fans

I seem to be on a bit of a Dawn French kick at the moment. Here is a moment from the Vicar of Dibley when Alice reveals the bridesmaid outfits. Made me laugh out loud, which is good medicine in the current dour climate.

my mate cantor jsm reminded me of other great british comedies today, specifically 'the vicar of dibley'. when i went home for xmas, they reran last year's special, which was happily new to me. there was a brilliant moment, which has me laughing and crying at the same time, that i wanted to embed here for your delectation and delight. sadly it is not embeddable, but do please try this link. it is the beginning of the denouement, so spoiler alert if that is important to you. n. says the bloke who plays harry is very nice, and i think she said he supports liverpool.

it is interesting to me that she had been reported as saying that she didn't think she would live to be very old. i have often felt like that. i don't think it is being particularly morbid, it is just a feeling. as long as i am reasonably healthy, i'm happy to hang around. i plan to see qpr win the premiership (which means at least another 30 years i'd say).

as for ms. french - the article begins thus:

"To say that Dawn French is much loved is rather like saying that some women quite like chocolate. If she wasn't a national treasure before The Vicar of Dibley hit our TV screens in 1994, that status was swiftly accorded her after she put on a cassock and answered every village's ideal of how a woman of the cloth should be: compassionate, capable and heaps of fun."

this pic is from the same series as the previous one, and reminded me how much i adore dawn french. i have adored her from the beginning, yet still get ticked off when people say to me, "o you must LOVE 'the vicar of dibley'!" my standard reply is something along the lines of "why on earth would i find any connection with a comedy about a rubenesque female clergyperson's adventures in a rural congregation?" of course i am no longer living in the shenandoah valley, so the response may have become a little more obscure. also, i do happen to love that programme :-) but that is not the point!

anyway, i consider ms french to be a genius of my generation. despite her zaftig physical presence, when she is acting, she becomes the character whether it is tall or short, thin or fat, male or female, black or white. brilliant. i believe that laughter is one of the greatest gifts, and i love her for making me laugh.
