The Epitome of Angelic

Sadly this is only a picture of a photo (the negative was lost many years ago). It is, however, generally held to be a representation of the sister of ravaj at her most beautiful moment of childhood. Happily, while no longer necessarily angelic, she continues to shine.

how gasted is your flabber?

some years ago, i went to see a movie in nyc with some dear friends. it was called 'junior', and it starred the governator as a pregnant man. i did not enjoy the film. it so happened that at that time i was writing my senior sermon, and it was all about infertility. the movie made me cry. anyway ... some fancy newspapers have now picked up the story first broken in the advocate magazine (you may read it here) about thomas beatie and his wife nancy who live in bend, oregon. i read it today in the indy - 'we just want to be a family,' says oregon's pregnant man. Thomas is a ftm transexual who kept his reproductive organs. When his partner was unable to have children, having had a hysterectomy, thomas stopped taking his testosterone until he began to menstruate, and with fertility treatments became pregnant.

is there anything wrong with this? religious groups and so-called family values groups are going mental about it. the situation is certainly a mind-bender. it doesn't particularly bother me. the question that i have is, particularly since a previous attempt by thomas resulted in an ectopic pregnancy that nearly killed him, why go to such lengths to be a birth parent when there are so so many children in the world available for adoption? families are great. families need children. and children need families. it is a great story, guaranteed to make world-wide news and poke with a stick myriad pressure groups. meanwhile, myriad children sit and wait for someone to take them home and give them the family life for which they yearn. that is what upsets me about this story.

happy families

stonehenge - the good old days

here's a sweepingly generalised question: are there any happy families any more?

i suppose i should go back to my own archives re the discussion on the nature of happiness.

ok - how about: where are the emotionally healthy families?

look at the cheerful children in the photo. they may even be holding hands. they have just been adding their footprints to all the others way way back to the original druids. they look like they are having a fun day. 37 years later they are both miserable, lonely and chronically ill.

perhaps in the end the question should be more along the lines of: where do we find hope?

my first thought? babies and children. being with them how can i not want to do everything i can to help make sure they are safe and well?

and if you don't have one of these little elves? i know there are millions of children in need - it is just a bit harder to make that gut connection that comes from holding one in your arms.

in any case, googled 'child poverty and hunger' and saw this re the hits:

about 5,030,000 for child poverty and hunger. (0.58 seconds)

found this box of old slides today, and a scanner that can scan them. in those olden golden days when we were allowed to climb all over the rocks of stonehenge, here is my father pretending, i think, to be samson :-)

... but i am rather fond of this one.

anyway, we had a wonderful lunch together. my first time at the ivy and, forbidden by n. to turn my head to look at jonathan ross and his pink-headed wife, i had to make do with the profile of the erstwhile bisto lady and occasional glimpses of miranda richardson over the shoulder of a man with enormous eyebrows. o, the food was quite lovely too :-)

life in london is o so very different.

happy birthday to noam!

family matters

samuel hoschander

this is a photograph of my great-grandfather, samuel hoschander. he came from a religious family in poland, but emigrated to berlin at some point possibly after WW1. he was a sofer, and i have a small wooden yad that he carved.

yesterday i received a call from california in response to a letter i wrote to a kibbutz in israel a couple of months ago. more hoschanders! they also are descended from a samuel who went to berlin maybe around the same time. our excitement is palpable!

this is a photograph from 60 years ago. one of the recent successes of my family tree project was to find the young man in this picture. i tried to e-mail the photo to him but it didn't work out so i am putting it here instead. greetings eddy, and i hope the rest of you enjoy this lovely photo for itself!

my mother observes the gregorian date so we do also. i observe the british date, although it was the previous day here. whenever we observe, however, it is still two years since we lost my father. he should be watching the world cup, and telling us gently not to be so hard on cristiano ronaldo. this picture reminds me of his mischievous side. a time to mourn, but also a time to grin.

there is so much to consider, so many plates to keep spinning ... some to let go and new ones to start up.

85 years ago or thereabouts my grandmother and her sister got all dressed up and had photos taken. mutti is the one in the cutaway coat. what fun!

need more fun. what do you do for fun?

the 10th of may would have been ahf's 79th birthday. i tried to send this picture to a number of friends, and many of them could not see it on their computers so i decided to put it up here.

this is my father and his mother. a person always with a book, and always with a sense of humour.
